Sample 3
Stage 1: Boat (with canoeing options, 2-3 hours)
Traditional boat over the deep waters of Killarney's Loch Léin
- and 1500 years into history to the nearby island of Inisfallen;
one
of
the great early-Christian ecclesiastical sites of Ireland and
once education centre to Ireland’s gaelic nobility.
The mountain-shore of the valley is draped with the last vestiges
of the ancient oak forests that once covered Ireland. Buried
deep in these woods is the splendid and remote O’Sullivan’s
Cascade – a place of magnificent
natural history and shrouded in a phenomenal wealth of mythic
lore.
Three lakes and a river form the basin of the Killarney Valley,
a waterway and hinterland of outstanding ecological importance
(UNESCO Bio-Sphere Reserve). Our journey out of the Lower Lake
(Loch Léin) will take us into Muckross or the Middle
Lake to call at the Great House of the valley, Muckross House
and Gardens
before taking the Long Range River to reach the Upper Lake
and onwards into the great glen at the head of these waters;
the
Black Valley.
Active travel option - canoeing:
From here, active travellers have the option of canoeing or kayaking
in the still dark waters along this ice-carved glen to the headwaters
of the lake system at the mouth of the Black Valley.
Stage 2: Jaunting Car (1-2 hours, with hike or bike options)
Traditional horse and jaunting cars provide a classic experience
and transport through the most dramatic mountain pass in Ireland;
the Gap of Dunloe. This glaciated glen owes it’s spectacular
beauty to the last ice age when a great tongue of glacier slipped
through the hills here and dividing the mountains of Killarney
and the mighty McGillycuddy Reeks.
Active travel option – hiking or biking:
For those wishing to walk or indeed, bike ride, the Gap of Dunloe
provides exhilarating exercise!
